Responsible trade
can save the Amazon rainforest
Amazon Your Business
charts the new trend of biodiversity-based goods and services
that are emerging from this biologically-rich region. It
presents the first generation of sustainable quality products
from the Amazon, which is on the verge of breaking into the
mainstream markets in Europe and the United States. These
include body care products, cosmetics, aromatic essential oils,
shoes made from sustainable caiman leather, fashionable wild
rubber bags, ‘green gold’, medicines, energy drinks, snacks,
wild gourmet chocolate, food supplements, kitchenware and
furniture. The book also contains important interviews with
government officials, the heads of international organisations,
NGOs, private enterprises and experts working in this field,
shedding light on the advances, challenges and different
perspectives of biodiversity business and conservation.
BioTrade has helped
fund Amazon Your Business and has made important contributions
to the area of BioTrade addressed in the publication.

UNCTAD SG supports BioTrade
cooperation with CAN
The
Secretary-General of UNCTAD, Supachai Panichpakdi, expressed his
support for the efforts being made by the Andean Community of
Nations (CAN) in the area of the environment. "Biodiversity is a
very important issue for UNCTAD, and we put the utmost
importance on the BioTrade programme that we promote jointly
with CAN, since it constitutes the livelihoods of so many
people".
On his first
official visit to Peru, Supachai was made an "honorary
citizen"
of CAN. In a special ceremony at the organization's headquarters
in Lima, the Secretary-General of CAN, Mr. Freddy Ehlers,
thanked Supachai for his "efforts in promoting UNCTAD's model of
