Today there is no doubt anymore
that trade and investment matters for biodiversity
conservation. We also know that if we do want
to meet the 2010 target we have to make trade
work in favour of conservation. Parties to the
CBD and biodiversity stakeholders have adopted
the 2010 target as a roadmap for implementation,
but have they considered means for engaging
the business sector? What are the 2010 challenges
we face in developing principles, standards,
criteria and indicators for businesses engaged
in biodiversity trade?
This workshop will focus on challenges
of verifying and certifying private sector trade
in biodiversity-based goods and services. It
will review the BioTrade Principles and Criteria,
biodiversity-related certification schemes,
and the efforts of small and medium biodiversity
businesses. The workshop will finish with a
round-table discussion of the challenges facing
small and medium business to trade sustainably
in biodiversity-based goods and services.
