Objective

The roundtable will discuss the role that small companies - specifically those linked to the natural ingredients sector- see for themselves in the context of the CBD and the challenges they face in their day-to-day business practices.

Private sector participation is regarded as crucial in the implementation of the CBD. Effective involvement of business has however proven to be difficult. Much attention goes to big business and the mitigation of negative impacts. But what about the positive contribution that small businesses can make? Over the last 5 years, the UNCTAD BioTrade Initiative in conjunction with national and international partners has been working actively with small businesses. They have been providing trade promotion and technical assistance activities of products and services derived from species that are native to a countries' biodiversity.

Methodology

This roundtable discussion on biodiversity and small & medium business will focus on the opportunities and the challenges of commercialisation of biodiversity good and services. The roundtable will be introduced and moderated by a journalist. Some of the guiding questions for the discussion will be:

  • Biodiversity: why does it matter to small businesses?

  • Is there a role for small business in biodiversity conservation and sustainable use? How can they contribute to the CBD objectives

  • Using biodiversity for marketing differentiation, do consumers care?

  • Sustainable use and profits: myth or reality?

  • Sustainable use and quality management; what's the link?

  • What are the positive impacts of BioTrade companies and their value chains on biodiversity?

  • What incentives would get more companies on board for the cause of biodiversity conservation?
