Ugandan biotrade companies win awards

Two companies, supported by the BioTrade National Programme of Uganda, won awards at the President’s Export Awards 2006. This is an annual event organised by the Uganda Export Promotion Board to recognise and encourage the business sector in their export achievements and honour the best performing exporters. The prestigious award ceremony was held on 6th October 2006, at Kampala Sheraton Hotel.

Over 30 product groups in 13 broad sector categories were vying for the Gold, Silver and Bronze awards. This year’s theme: “Casting the net wide - the regionalisation agenda” primarily focused on the new integration of East Africa. It was aimed at encouraging Uganda's local exporters to look beyond their local markets and take on a wider perspective.

The specific objectives of the awards were to: formally recognise the contribution of exporters to national economic development and prosperity; encourage higher, qualitative and diversified performance by exporters to generate national consciousness; and sustain the economy.

ISO-certified Guru Nanak Oil Mills Ltd (pictured left) was awarded bronze in the organic product category for providing employment to rural women in Northern Uganda and for being the only East African shea nut exporter with the USA National Organic Program Certificate (NOP - USDA) as well as an EU certificate.

Reco Industries Ltd (pictured right) took away the Bronze award in its category in recognition of its innovation in Bio products (Papain and herbal extracts), as well as for employing over 85 staff and engaging 1,500 farmers in out-grower schemes in South Western Uganda.

BioTrade congratulates these companies for their achievements, and the BioTrade Facilitation Programme (BTFP) continues to support the BioTrade National Programme of Uganda in the trade promotion of biodiversity-based products and services.
