On 13 September 2006, the BioTrade Initiative convened a Business Meeting to discuss the creation of the Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT) in Paris. The event brought together companies from the cosmetic and health industries.

The primary objective of this business meeting was to present the progress made in an initial proposal for the UEBT. Aldivia (France) and Natura (Brazil) were invited to present their business models. They showed that adhering to the BioTrade Principles and Criteria makes business sense, their products being bought by an increasing number of consumers that are interested sustainability, biodiversity, and equitable trade. They both expressed a need for a mechanism that can allow for recognition of their efforts to promote the sustainable use of biodiversity and the sharing of benefits derived from this use.

The UEBT was presented as an instrument to bring together businesses from different industries around the globe that are sourcing materials from biodiversity and are committed to the BioTrade Principles and Criteria. The BioTrade Principles and Criteria, verified via the UEBT, offer enterprises a way to positively contribute to meeting the requirements of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Finally, a Steering Group was created from among participants to provide input to strategic during the formulation phase of the UEBT. The BioTrade Initiative will facilitate this phase, bringing together the contributions of different stakeholders.
