PhytoTrade
Africa launches Natural Product Awards 2006
PhytoTrade Africa, a partner of the BioTrade Initiative, is
launching a set of annual awards for achievement in the Natural
Products industry in Southern Africa. The idea is to try and use
these awards to raise the profile of the industry, and to
demonstrate to a wider public the social and environmental
returns from investing in this sector. PhytoTrade Africa
specifically promotes products derived from indigenous plants
that meet certain Fair Trade and sustainability criteria.
There will be three categories of awards:
First: The
Maruline Award for the most innovative new natural product
launched in 2005. Prize: SAR 15,000 in cash (approx. USD 2,000).
Second: The
Ubuntu Natural Award for outstanding achievement in the
field of Fair Trade natural products. Prize: SAR 7,500 in cash
(approx. USD 1,000).
Third: The
Ethical Biotrade Award for outstanding achievement in the
field of environmentally sustainable natural products. Prize:
SAR 7,500 in cash (approx. USD 1,000).
The panel of judges include:

Dr Nigel Gericke, co-author of Useful Plants of Southern Africa,
founder of Phyto Nova Pty Ltd, president of BioGenesis
Laboratories
§
Mr Mike Brook, MD of the Organic Herb Trading Company in the UK
(the world’s biggest supplier of organic products), Chairman of
the Soil Association’s Health Products Standards Committee
§
Ms Jennifer Sieff, Executive
Director of Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa (FTTSA)
§
Mr Saleim Fakir, Lereko Energy (Pty) Ltd, formerly Director of
the World Conservation Union South Africa (IUCN-SA)
§
Mr Wouter Conradie, Organic Certification Adviser, Woolworths,
South Africa
§
Prof Aubrey Parsons, President of SA Association of Food Science
and Technology, past President of the Society of Cosmetic
Chemists, head of R&D for Nimue Skin Technology
The awards
will be handed out by Mr Valli Moosa at a ceremony at the
Natural and Organics Expo in Johannesburg on Friday 20th
October 2006.
