Peru's potential in supplying natural ingredients is recognized
worldwide. Around 1100 medicinal native species have been identified and
few of them are already recognised abroad as traditional medicines,
those including Cat's claw, Camu-camu and Maca. Indeed, Peruvian
knowledge of its native flora has lead to research and development by
multinational pharmaceutical companies.
However, Peru is still facing big
challenges to make the most of its competitive advantages as a leading
supplier of natural ingredients. Up to date, it has been found
that most of the traded ingredients are not produced under sustainable
environmental and social practices and often lack behind in complying
with the international quality and safety standards
With
support from BTFP, the
BioTrade Programme in Peru in joint collaboration with
the INRENA and the Instituto Peruano de Productos Naturales (IPPN) is
supporting the value chain of Natural Ingredients for Cosmetics
and Pharmaceutics with the following objective:
To develop the sub-sector of
natural ingredients for cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, therewith
promoting trust and collaboration. This is expected to enhance
competitiveness and to result in the application of sustainability
criteria in the productive and commercial activities within the
different supply chains.
