The BioTrade National Programme in Ecuador known as "Iniciativa Biocomercio Ecuador" was launched in November 2001. Its mission is to "facilitate sustainable development and biodiversity conservation in line with the objectives of the CBD,  through the promotion of trade and investment activities which boost the use of Ecuadorian resources"

The "Iniciativa Biocomercio Ecuador" is coordinated by the Corporación de Promoción de Exportaciones e Inversiones (CORPEI) in joint collaboration with the NGO Ecociencia.  Current activities of the programme also involve joint projects with the Dutch Embassy, GEF, CAF, RAMSAR, among others.

UNCTAD continues to provide overall guidance to the programme and technical assistance through the BTFP.
