During the past three decades medicinal plants and their derivatives have played an important role in the strategy for rural development in Colombia. This is mainly because of four main aspects: first, the great biodiversity of plants with medicinal characteristics available in the country (more than 6,000); second, the growing market for plant-based products; third the cultural importance attached to the use of plants by indigenous communities, and fourth the ecological relevance of medicinal plants

With support from BTFP, the  BioTrade Programme in Colombia in joint collaboration with Proexport  is supporting  the value chain of Natural Ingredients for Cosmetics and Pharmaceutics with the following objective:

To facilitate and strengthen the development of the Natural Ingredients value chain  for Pharmaceuticals and Cosmetics in Colombia, with the aim of exporting, and taking into consideration economic, technological, environmental & social sustainability criteria.
