chooses products associated to an ethical social attitude and
with environmental responsability. It was needed an
international marketplace to promote these companies and
organisations commited with sustainability and their results.
This marketplace was launched in November 2005, in Brazil,
concurrent to BioFach América Latina: it is called ExpoSustentat.

Fourteenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CITES
3-15 June 2007, The Hague (Netherlands)
Description:
The Convention on International
Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) will
hold its next triennial conference in The Hague from 3 to 15
June to decide how to improve the wildlife trade regime.
Among other issues, the
participating Governments will consider some
40
new proposals for amending the rules for specific species.
Many of these proposals reflect growing international concern
about the accelerating destruction of the world’s marine and
forest resources through overfishing and excessive logging.

Private sector engagement in
biodiversity-related conventions
Special focus on the sector of natural
ingredients for the cosmetics and food industries

Description:
UNCTAD, in cooperation
with the International Finance Cooperation (IFC),
will be holding a meeting to bring together the Secretariats of MEAs like
CITES,
CBD and Ramsar and members of the
private sector involved in natural ingredients in the foods and cosmetics
sector. Discussions and presentations will address ways in which these
conventions can better engage business in this particular sector and,
reciprocally, how the private sector could contribute more to the
implementation of these Agreements.

2nd Meeting of the
Ad-hoc working group on biodiversity agreements and economic
issues

UNCTAD BioTrade Initiative - BTFP - Andean BioTrade Programme

Description:
Actors from the
BioTrade National Programmes and the private sector will
discuss and exchange information on UNCTAD BTFP and the
Andean BioTrade Programme.
The topics addressed by the workshop include:

Future
activities within the framework of the
Andean and Amazon BioTrade
Programmes.
§
Concrete results from processes initiated in 2006 by the BTFP, such
as the formulation of the Union for
Ethical BioTrade (UEBT), guidelines for the equitable sharing of
benefits, and the impact and information assessment systems.
§
Proposed work plans and processes already underway in projects
belonging to the Andean and Amazon BioTrade Programmes.
§
The
second phase of BTFP.
Within this framework, UNCTAD BTFP and
the Secretary-General of CAN have invited different actors from the
programmes and the private sector to participate in the discussions.

Arapaima gigas in the Amazon Region

From the work carried out in Peru on the Arapaima
value chain, the BTFP is organising a first meeting with
international experts of the countries producing Arapaima and
